Studio 54 was a popular and world renowned nightclub from 1977 until 1981 when it was sold by founders and creators Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager.
Danceteria was a well-known 4-floor NYC nightclub which operated from '79 – '86 (& in the Hamptons until '95). Throughout its history, the club had 7 different locations, 3 in NYC & 4 in the Hamptons.
The 2nd (and most famous) of Danceteria's many homes, located at 30 West 21st Street in Manhattan, served as the location for the disco scene in the film Desperately Seeking Susan.
Area was a themed nightclub that operated from 1983 to 1987. Every 6 weeks Jennifer Goode redesigned the space to fit a specific theme. (1)
Themes included "Night" (with a masked welder), "Surrealism", "Suburbia", "Red", and "Gnarly" (with skate ramps and boarders). (2)
Opened in November 1983 by owner Peter Gatien, the New York Limelight originally started as a disco & rock club. In Sept. 2003, it reopened under the name "Avalon"; closing its doors for good in 2007.
The 2003 film Party Monster, starring Macaulay Culkin & Seth Green, was based on party promoter Michael Alig's killing and dismemberment of Angel Melendez, a drug dealer at New York's Limelight Club.
Tunnel was a nightclub opened in December 1986 at the cost of $5 million by Eli Dayan – the founder of Bonjour Jeans – in a space which was formerly a railroad freight terminal.
Tunnel closed its doors late in 2001, due to non-payment of rent and New York mayor Rudy Giuliani's quality-of-life campaign.
In the 1991 novel American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, the club is frequented by Patrick Bateman and his associates as a trendy place to bring women or to purchase cocaine.
In the HBO TV series Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw discusses having a "drunken night" at The Tunnel at age 22, which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy.
In operation from 1995 to 2001, Twilo had Sasha and John Digweed playing a monthly residency on the last Friday of every month. Saturday night events were hosted by resident DJ Junior Vasquez.
Other DJs that would play frequently included Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Robert Fauver, Richie Hawtin aka (Plastikman), Danny Tenaglia, Merritt, Jeff Mills, Steve Lawler, DJ Dan, and Sven Väth.
During his radio show on Sept 4, '09 Digweed is quoted saying: "It's definitely one of those legendary clubs [...] the sound system, the setup, the lighting, and the whole vibe was truly amazing."
Playing host to dozens of legendary DJs from around the world, Twilo was important in popularizing international styles of house and trance music within the United States.
