Start at the bottom of the Royal Mile (at the Scottish Parliament) because it's a good way to start quietly before encountering the masses in the center and top.
The hot counter is awesome value for curry. Also try the discount shelf (far left corner) around 5pm. the meat discount are insane.

this building housed a clock as did did edinburgh castle when the ball at the top reached the bottom it was 1pm and time to fire the gun so ships in the forth knew the time and set there clocks
Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their whisky, ask for a recommendation!
