JFK was originally named Idlewild Airport and was constructed in April 1942. On December 24, 1963, the airport was rededicated John F. Kennedy International Airport.
In order to decide who would design the Park, the Central Park Commission held the country’s first landscape design contest. The ‘Greensward Plan,’ by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won.
Construction on the Manhattan Bridge began in 1896. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world!
