The Gateway Arch, also known as the Gateway to the West, is the tallest national monument in the U.S. Construction began on Feb. 12, 1963, with the last section put into place on Oct. 28, 1965.
The University of Iowa was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women equally when its doors opened to students in 1855.
Old Capitol became the first building owned by the University after the state government moved to Des Moines in 1857.
