Steve: Formed in 1810 by members of the Cheah clan, the oldest of the 5 major Hokkien clans in Penang. The main tempe was completed in 1870 with Peranakan, Malay, British & Chinese architectural influences.
Steve: Perhaps the most well-known kongsi. A gold & black plaque honours Tua Sai Yah & Ong Soon Yah, 2 patron saints of the Khoo clan who saved the dynasty from a much larger army in 4th century Jin Dynasty.
Steve: One of the top five clans in Penang, whose full name means ‘Hall of the Nine Dragons’ – paying homage to a Lim ancestor whose nine sons became chief magistrates during the time of the Tan Dynasty.
Steve: This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown; reflecting the temple's embrace of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism.
Steve: A bit of colonial architecture, with scenic views over the rest of the area. Pretty eerie to look at those old cannons aimed at Butterworth across sea.
Steve: Grab an assam laksa at the base, explore the wet market and then continue up the stairs for some great scenic views, the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas and Guan Yin (goddess of mercy) statue.
Steve: Step back to get good insight into the culture and how the Baba and Nyonya lived 100 years ago. Great photo opportunities in this mansion, with jewellery museum, temple and more.

Steve: Serving up authentic curry mee since 1946, definitely one to try. A little different to others, with their special cuttle fish chilli base, and soup cooked over a charcoal stove.
