Class Descriptions
Yoga: Vinyasa
Our Open Level Vinyasa yoga classes are as diverse as the teachers who offer them. Classes incorporate creative sequencing, yoga philosophy, meditation and pranayama (breathwork) . Expect a dynamic flow progressing through standing postures, forward folds, backbends, balancing poses, twists and maybe even some inversions.
Yoga: Restorative
Restorative yoga facilitates relaxation on the cellular level, balancing the nervous system and boosting the immune system, moving one toward deep stillness. Practiced mostly on the floor in seated or supine postures with the support of bolsters, cushions, blankets and other yoga props, this practice is extremely effective for soothing mind, body and soul. This class is gentle enough for every body but typically more challenging mentally.
Yoga: Slow Flow
Slow Flow is a hybrid asana class incorporating elements of vinyasa, yin and restorative yoga. Practitioners experience a peaceful decrescendo with class ending in extended relaxation and meditation. This class is gentle enough for most - teachers offer modifications and props to accommodate anybody.
Yoga: Lady Niguma
Lady Niguma yoga is a subtle body-focused practice including the nadis, chakras, bandhas, and drishti. We begin with chanting, breathwork, sun salutations, and move through an asana sequence to unwind energetic knots. When the knots are hard and tight we feel anxious, depressed and angry. When our central channel is open, we feel emotionally and physically balanced and can access higher planes of realization. This class is accessible for all.
Yoga: Community Class with Liberation Prison Yoga
Liberation Prison Yoga: A donation-based class for all who are feeling the pain of living today." We welcome all, and invite those re-entering society whether they have been imprisoned, exiled, are refugees seeking asylum or just those who feel alienated in any way. We are all looking for home, for safety, or a refuge. We will offer you the skills to be able to find safety within yourselves in the sanctuary that is The Three Jewels. This class is trauma informed, with a focus on connecting from the heart, and safe ways to explore our inner selves through the yoga practice and mindfulness tools, vital support systems amid chaos and stress. Classes are free and taught by a certified, experienced Yoga Instructor.
Yoga: Intermediate
Vinyasa flow class exploring the world of inversions and arm balances.
Yoga: 12 Step Recovery
Yoga for 12-step Recovery (Y12SR) is a framework for integrating the wisdom of yoga with the practical tools of 12-step recovery programs. Y12SR offers a physical, mental and spiritual approach to support recovery from addictive behavior patterns, guided by the premise that "the issues live in the tissues." Y12SR meetings are divided between a group check-in (equivalent to a 12-step meeting) focusing on a particular theme of recovery, followed by a yoga practice integrating the same theme. Y12SR is open to all 12-step program members. It is intended as part of a holistic recovery program including the cognitive work of 12-step programs, not as a replacement.
Yoga Basics: Seeds for Yoga
This 6-class yoga series is designed for students to begin or deepen their yoga practice. This class series is particularly appropriate for new students who want to begin a yoga practice as well as those who have attended open-level classes but haven't yet had the benefit of detailed practice with alignment, technique, and principles. Members who regularly attend meditation and dharma classes will find this series aligns with their current practice and expands it to include the body through asana. Each class focuses on foundational yogic instruction and a portion of each class will include dharma, breathwork, and meditation in addition to the physical asana practice. Students are encouraged to take all 6 classes, which altogether will prepare them to walk confidently into any open-level yoga class. These classes can also be taken on an individual drop-in basis or in any order. Class 1: Breath & Movement ; Class 2: Base & Balance ; Class 3: Strength & Vulnerability ; Class 4: Stretch & Release ; Class 5: Happiness & Acceptance ; Class 6: Attention & Awareness.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is a technique in which you learn to relax consciously. It is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation and is designed to release muscular, emotional and mental tensions. It is said that a single hour of yoga nidra is as restful as four hours of conventional sleep! The term yoga nidra is derived from two Sanskrit words, yoga meaning union or one-pointed awareness, and nidra which means sleep. During the practice of yoga nidra, one's consciousness sits in the threshold state between sleep and wakefulness but is subject to neither. In the raja yoga system of Patanjali, there is a state called pratyahara where mind and mental awareness are dissociated from sensory channels. Yoga nidra is one aspect of pratyahara which leads to higher states of concentration, and is profoundly useful for developing awareness, memory and creativity, and strengthening the central nervous system.
